20 Mission-Actions That Inspire Outstanding Performance
By Barbara Brown, Ph.D.

Staff members are more committed to delivering extraordinary performance when they understand how individual activities are linked to the organization's Mission. Use these strategies to create this understanding:

  1. Place your organization's Mission on a large poster in your office.

  2. Conduct a 15-minute staff meeting and discuss how your immediate office contributes to the achievement of your organization's Mission.

  3. Conduct a 15-minute staff meeting and discuss how Three Top Priorities in your office are linked to your organization's Mission.

  4. Designate 5 minutes of each regularly scheduled staff meeting to discussing how One Top Priority in your office is linked to your organization's Mission.

  5. Conduct a 15-minute staff meeting and discuss how one service or product you provide to customers is linked to your organization's Mission.

  6. For each staff member, determine a positive achievement every month; then, explain how that achievement helped your organization achieve its Mission.

  7. After the achievement of an office goal, write a general "thank you" note to all staff members describing how that achievement is linked to your organization's Mission.

  8. After the achievement of an individual goal, write a specific "thank you" note to the responsible staff member, describing how the achievement of that goal is linked to your organization's Mission.

  9. Every 6 months, take 15 minutes to discuss with each staff member the mutual links between his/her Mission and your organization's Mission.

  10. Every 6 months, take 15 minutes to discuss with each staff member how his/her responsibilities are linked to your organization's Mission

  11. Identify one major way you help your organization achieve its Mission.

  12. Identify one major way each of your staff members helps your organization achieve its Mission.

  13. When a customer compliments you or your organization, deliver your acknowledgment by including a link to your organization's Mission.

  14. Create a monthly "Group Mission Contribution" award that describes specifically how a routine accomplishment is linked to your organization's Mission.

  15. Have a monthly "Mission Contribution" pizza party where you celebrate how your staff helped your organization achieve its Mission.

  16. Ask each staff member to write one action your office can take to improve how you help your organization achieve its Mission.

  17. At the beginning of each month, discuss with your staff how the achievement of one major priority will contribute to the achievement of your organization's Mission.

  18. Have a contest where staff members draw pictures that depict how your office helps your organization achieve its Mission.

  19. Place your organization's Mission at the top of every office document and meeting agenda.

  20. Open every staff meeting with a "thank you" for helping your organization achieve its Mission.
