Are
You a "Committed" V.I.P. Leader?
By Barbara Brown, Ph.D.
"Success seems to be connected with
action.
Successful people keep moving.
They make mistakes, but they don't quit."
In
pursuing success, Visioning, Influencing, and Performing
(V.I.P.) Leaders are able to motivate others as well as themselves
to embrace and achieve common goals. They have a sense of what
they want to accomplish, know what it takes to accomplish it,
and will do what it takes to accomplish it. This requires commitment,
and commitment is an essential quality of V.I.P. Leaders.
In
his book, The 21 Indispensable Qualities of Leaders,
John C. Maxwell includes commitment as the third most essential
quality for a successful leader. Maxwell says that when it comes
to commitment, there are four types of people:
(1)
Cop-Outs: People who have no goals and do not commit.
(2)
Hold-Outs: People who don't know if they can reach their goals,
so they're afraid to commit.
(3)
Drop-Outs: People who start toward a goal but quit when the going
gets tough.
(4)
All-Outs: People who set goals, commit to them, and pay the price
to reach them.
Successful
V.I.P. Leaders are All-Outs. They know what they want, they develop
a plan to achieve what they want, and they persevere until they
get what they want.
