Achieve GREATNESS by Becoming A Level 5 Leader
By Barbara Brown, Ph.D.

"Leadership isn't about a place; it's about a process.
It involves skills and abilities that are useful whether
one is in the Executive Suite or on the Front Lines;
on Wall Street or Main Street."

-James Kouzes and Barry Posner, Authors

In his book, Good To Great, Jim Collins describes the behaviors of Leaders who are superior at generating profit, achieving goals, creating good will, and inspiring commitment. They do this by being level 5 Leaders. That is, they are capable, contributing, and caring. But to be level 5, they also have to possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of Leaders who are level 1, level 2, level 3, and level 4. Think about where you are on the Leadership Scale and use these strategies to become a level 5 Leader.

Level 5: Executive Leader

Leaders at this level are able to build ENDURING GREATNESS in themselves and others. They practice personal humility, demonstrate professional determination, and exhibit unwavering purpose. Level 5 Leaders embody all the characteristics and practice the behaviors of Leaders from level 1 through level 4.

Level 4: Effective Leader

Leaders at this level inspire high levels of commitment, articulate a compelling vision of the future, motivate constituents to vigorously pursue common goals, and stimulate superior performance in others. Level 4 Leaders embody all the characteristics and practice the behaviors of Leaders from level 1 through level 3.

Level 3: Competent Leader

Leaders at this level are great at directing, coordinating, and controlling. They organize people and processes, ensuring that predetermined goals are accomplished in an efficient and effective manner. Level 3 leaders embody all the characteristics and practice the behaviors of Leaders from level 1 through level 2.

Level 2: Contributing Leader

Leaders at this level are excellent at working with others in group settings. They contribute individual capabilities to the achievement of group objectives. Level 2 Leaders embody all the characteristics and practice the behaviors of Leaders at level 1.

Level 1: Highly Capable Leader

Leaders at this level are productive and talented performers. They possess the kind of knowledge, skills, and good work habits that allow them to make valuable contributions on an individual level.
