Linking
Individual Goals
With Organizational Goals
By Barbara Brown, Ph.D.
Leaders
who are effective at achieving goals have a vision of their organization's
future. They look at where the organization is headed and accordingly
assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related
to that direction. Such leaders then develop strategies to make
sure the organization is on the right track and ensure that the
tactics they are using to achieve goals are directly aligned with
the needs of the organization. Their vision drives performance and
focus.
Use
the following strategies to ensure that your individual goals are
aligned with organizational goals:
(1)
Learn the mission, vision, and value statements within your organization
(2)
Determine how what your organization does relates to its mission,
vision, and values
(3)
Identify how the functions of all departments, sections, units,
or offices relates to your organization's mission, vision, and values
(4)
Assess how what you do relates to your organization's mission, vision,
and values
(5)
Describe how your daily activities contributes to the achievement
of one major initiative your organization is pursuing
(6)
List one core competency you possess that is essential to successful
performance in your current job
(7)
Explain how this core competency also contributes to the achievement
of goals within your immediate unit
