Assess
Your Visionary Leadership Skills
By Barbara Brown, Ph.D.
Visionary
Leadership
requires certain skills. Use these skills to develop your action-plan
for becoming a Visionary Leader. First, use the
following scale to assess where you are now. Then, retake the
assessment every month until you score a 4 in every area.
0-Never
1-Once in a while
3-Fairly often
4-Always
_____
1. Visualizing: I have a 'clear' PICTURE of what I want
to achieve and when I want to achieve it.
_____
2. Futuristic Thinking: I don't just think about where
I am today. I think about where I want to be in the future.
_____
3. Showing Foresight: I am an informed planner. I don't
just consider what I want to do. I consider how technological,
procedural, organizational, and other factors might affect my
plans.
_____
4. Proactive Planning: I establish goals and specific strategies
for achieving those goals. I anticipate or consider potential
obstacles and develop contingency plans to overcome those obstacles.
_____
5. Creative Thinking: I challenge myself to explore new
and different ways of looking at issues, opportunities, and problems.
Instead of saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," I say, "If
it ain't broke, BREAK IT!"
_____
6. Taking Risks: I recognize that I must not only 'think'
outside the box, but I must do things that might require me to
step outside my comfort zone. I look at failures as learning opportunities,
not setbacks.
_____
7. Process Alignment: I know how to link my goals with
the goals of my organization. I can articulate how job and tasks
benefits my immediate office, the department(s) directly connected
to my immediate office, and my entire organization.
_____
8. Coalition Building: I know that in order to achieve
my goals, I must create and maintain successful working relationships
within and outside my organization. I actively pursue opportunities
to work with various types of individuals, departments, and constituency
groups.
_____
9. Continuous Learning: I regularly participate in training
and other types of developmental activities, both inside and outside
my organization. I examine every interaction, positive or negative,
for a 'learning moment'. I actively pursue opportunities to work
with people and participate in projects that will expand my knowledge
base, challenge my thinking, and stretch my imagination.
_____
10. Embracing Change: I know that change is an essential
part of growth and development. When encountering unanticipated
or undesirable change, I actively explore ways to find some meaningful
or useful aspect of that change. I remain focused on the potential
'positives' of the change and incorporate those 'positives' into
my goal achievement action-plan.
